Linen vs Cotton Shirts: Which is Better for Indian Summer?

If you've ever stood in front of your wardrobe on a 42°C May afternoon wondering what to wear, you already understand the stakes. The wrong fabric and you're sweating through your shirt before you've left the house. The right one and you stay cool, look sharp, and feel like you've got it all figured out.

Two fabrics dominate the conversation for Indian summers: linen and cotton. Both are natural, both are breathable — but they behave very differently on your body, in your wardrobe, and over time.

What is Linen?

Linen is made from the fibres of the flax plant — one of the oldest textiles in the world. The hollow structure of linen fibres allows air to circulate freely, making it exceptionally breathable. It absorbs moisture quickly and releases it fast, which means sweat doesn't sit against your skin.

At Eagle Ray, we use a viscose-linen blend chosen for the Indian climate — the viscose adds a subtle sheen and softness, while the linen keeps it breathable.

What is Cotton?

Cotton is the most widely worn fabric in India. Soft, affordable, durable, and it works across seasons. As temperatures climb past 38–40°C, though, standard cotton can feel heavy and sticky — especially in humidity.

Cotton comes in several constructions suited to summer:

  • Crushed cotton — A textured finish that reduces fabric contact with skin, allowing more airflow. Ideal for casual wear in peak summer.
  • Fluid cotton — Lightweight and smooth, it drapes loosely and moves with you. Feels close to linen in terms of airflow.
  • Structured cotton — Holds its shape, slightly heavier. Better for office and semi-formal settings.

Linen vs Cotton: The Key Differences

Breathability: Linen wins. The hollow fibre structure outperforms cotton in breathability, especially in dry heat above 38°C. Crushed and fluid cotton come close.

Moisture management: Linen absorbs sweat faster and dries faster. If you're spending time outdoors in summer, linen keeps you drier for longer.

Softness: Cotton wins initially. Linen can feel slightly rough when new, though it softens significantly with wear. Viscose-linen blends close this gap considerably.

Wrinkle resistance: Cotton wins. Linen wrinkles easily — if you need a shirt that stays crisp through a full day, fluid or structured cotton is the better call.

Durability: Linen is actually stronger than cotton and gets better with age. A well-made linen shirt will outlast most cotton shirts.

Which Should You Choose?

Reach for linen when temperatures are above 38°C, you're spending time outdoors, or dressing for a casual occasion where a relaxed silhouette works. Reach for cotton when you need a crisper, more structured look, you're in an air-conditioned office most of the day, or you prefer fabric that holds its shape through a long day.

For most Indian men, the ideal summer wardrobe has both — linen shirts for outdoor occasions and peak heat months (April–June), quality cotton shirts for everyday office wear.
